“EXTREME” Home DETAILS REVEALED!
Royce Builders to offer Kubena Family plan to new homebuyers

Houston, TX – Royce Builders and Gallery Furniture helped to make a families dream come true on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and now the dream is being revealed.

Every detail of the Kubena family home, which was featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Sunday, February 19 th, was chosen with the family in mind in order to meet the needs of each family member from the architecture to the furniture and decorations. The design team was also careful to include many family photos and antiques from their original home back into their new surroundings. Several accent pieces came straight from their grandfather’s shed.

Identical twins, Sara and Tara Kubena have battled Leukemia for the last few years. Due to the special medical needs of Tara, who has been the recipient of a bone marrow transplant, the home was constructed with an IQ Air special HEPA filtration system installed. HEPA filters remove at least 99.97% of all airborne particles such as bacteria and approaches total efficiency on all known organisms harmful to humans.

Throughout the home, which totals 5268 square feet of total space, the cabinetry is designed with “no slam” technology so the many fingers of the Kubena children will be safe from harm. All curtains and draperies are made from a special fabric that absorbs bacteria, helping to keep the air germ-free for Tara.

Other rooms that feature unique designs include:

Sleepover Room

Tara’s condition has left her with limited access to her friends at school and other activities. The designers knew that both twins and older sister, Kelly, would need a special room where they could have their friends over to the house and where the air was pure for Tara, so they designed a Sleepover Room! Now all the girls and some of their friends can play dress up, board games and most importantly, spend time together, in one big room!

Candyland Room

Sara’s room is a true sweets lovers dream complete with an ice-cream cone castle bed, a candy-themed custom mural that wraps around the entire room, and giant gumball machines in each corner! The crown for the headboard of the bed came from a float for the East Bernard Christmas parade that her grandfather made and had in his storage shed.

Airplane Room

For Brady, an aspiring pilot, this room has it all—including a real flying simulator and pilot’s chair. His bed was constructed from sheet metal and rivets that appear to be from an airplane fuselage. The flight simulator is attached to a wall projector to give Brady the feeling he is really flying. His room has an attached office that overlooks the foyer and his own bathroom.

Butterfly Room

Butterflies flutter by in this most special of rooms. Tara’s love for butterflies is showcased here in Ty’s special project room. All the furniture in this room was made with an untreated wood to help Tara with her special air quality needs. This animated room comes complete with a butterfly bathroom, too.

Bubble Room

Kelly’s room, otherwise known as the bubble room, is filled with bright oranges and vibrant pinks. The textured wallpaper is iridescent and compliments the bubbles that surround the room. Kelly’s bed was her grandmothers and was refurbished so she could use it. Her room connects to a shared bathroom with sister, Sara.

Master Bedroom

John and Monica’s large master suite features a sitting area surrounded by cedar columns on one end and a spacious bath at the other. The bathroom features a garden tub with Jacuzzi jets, his and her double vanities with granite countertops, a separate 60” shower enclosure and a double walk-in closet with a custom organization system built into the wall. Traverteen tile floors accent this lovely bathroom.

Learning Center

Since Tara’s health prohibits her from attending school, the designers figured out a way to bring school to her. By installing a satellite video hookup to her classroom at school so she can see her teacher and classmates and they can see her, Tara will be able to rejoin her class and continue with her learning. This room also features books, games and learning tools to help all the children with their schoolwork.

Exterior

The backyard went through a complete transformation. Rainbow provided a complete outdoor entertainment unit for the children. There is also a burn pit with a gas grill on the slate back patio. Also constructed was a cedar trellis with a waterfall. The front patio is surrounded with an 18” stone seat and accented by a cast stone star in the entry.
