The Kubena family

John and Monica Kubena have a full house; four children including a set of identical twins, Sara and Tara who are battling Leukemia. Doctors were baffled at the statistical rarity for both twins to have the same non-genetic disease. With mounting medical bills for the twins, travel back and forth to Texas Children's Hospital in downtown Houston, and lengthy hospital stays for both girls, the Kubena’s had moved into a two-bedroom trailer adjacent to John’s dad. In addition to the lack of space, Tara had been unable to return home to her family due to the special air quality needs that she requires.

Family Update

“We want to thank everyone who participated in the build, who prayed and who gave any support. As we are settling into our lives, we’re still in awe from this experience and are eternally grateful,” - Monica Kubena.

Tara is doing great! Since the Kubena’s moved into their new home, Tara hasn’t had to spend any nights in hospital due to fevers and is off most of her medicines. Sara had a check up last week, and she’s doing great. Brady has completely moved in and is enjoying his new room. All the children are back in school, which started on the Aug. 15. All three girls recently had a birthday thrown for them sponsored by HEB and Chick-Fil-A. In June, Care Search sponsored the family on a trip to Washington, D.C. The trip proved to be a success, as they attained more support for funding for children’s treatment research. Monica and John are doing great and enjoying the new house. Although everything is going great for the Kubena’s, they are still hoping and praying that the twins have a complete recovery.

Messages to the Kubena family

I think this is wonderful what you are doing for this family. I cannot imagine both my children going through cancer treatment. My youngest daughter is also a cancer patient going through treatment at Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Center, which is very kid oriented and are there every step of the way. Even though I have not met the twins and their family, I think they are very courageous and my thoughts and prayers are with the twins and family. My daughter can't wait to see the episode on TV.
